As Alicia Silvestone prepares to take on the role of naïve Sara in Broadway’s new romantic comedy The Performers, the actress sat down with Entertainment Weekly to reflect on how playing California teen Cher in 1995’s Clueless changed everything for her and her castmates.
Unaware that writer/director Amy Heckerling based the comedy on Jane Austen's Emma, Silverstone said she was initially hesitant to play the “materialistic, annoying little bitch” Cher because she couldn’t relate to the character. “I didn’t understand fashion at all,” she remembered. “I didn’t understand why I had to keep having fittings. And so I kind of hated them.”
Luckily, after finally seeing the film, Silverstone understood just how important her sixty outfit changes were. "I thought the clothes were so wonderful, by the end I wanted all of them. I took a few things here and there. I didn't do a very good job at saving any of them. I was stupid about that whole thing. I think I gave them all away."
So where does Silverstone think Cher would be today if she were a real person? Happily married to her stepbrother Josh, played by Grace’s Paul Rudd.
You can see Alicia Silverstone in The Performers at the Longacre Theatre beginning October 23, and Paul Rudd in Grace, which is now open at the Cort Theatre.
